Health is not for the weak of heart. It is reserved for those who can commit to it.

Over 90% of Americans are still under stay at home orders. While these measures were meant to halt the spread of coronavirus, they did not come without some major side effects.

Anxiety, depression, and other mental disorders are on the rise. Along with that, domestic violence, death by suicide, alcohol and drug abuse and homelessness.

People like you and I are suffering.

Parents are locked in at home with reduced or no income, while also being forced to homeschool their children. And as much as we want to say: “This is the perfect time to enjoy your family and catch up on your to-do list,” in reality, this is not what’s happening.

Instead of being more peaceful and relaxed and reconnecting with their loved ones, more and more people are struggling with mental health. They feel isolated on the one hand, while on the other – like they have no safe space to retreat to. Even the best and the brightest fall prey to cabin fever and forsake all of the things they know to be good for them.

To make things worse, those who had preexisting health conditions are getting worse. A little understood fact is that anxiety and depression make hormone, thyroid and immune-related disorders worse. So, instead of getting better under the lockdown, people are getting worse.

On today’s episode of THE HEALTH WIZARD podcast, I am interviewing Dr. Russell Kennedy, MD, who is also a neuroscientist and anxiety specialist.

Dr. Kennedy is not a stranger to anxiety, fear, and depression. He grew up in an emotionally abusive and unstable environment. His father suffered from schizophrenia. His mother did not have the emotional maturity to shelter him or his brother from their volatile environment. He was forced to grow up and become the primary caregiver to both of his parents. But at a high cost. While suppressing his need to be nurtured, fear and anxiety set in and began to change how he perceived the world around him. And while he achieved amazing things in his life, as he grew up, while overcoming his tumultuous beginnings, anxiety never left him. It even cost him two marriages.

One day it became too much. He had to take action. He already tried therapies and medicine and learned that they were powerless to help him. He had to find a different way to get anxiety of his body, rather than manage it.

In 2015 Americans spent an estimated $41 billion on sleep aids and remedies. This year, this number is expected to grow to $52 billion! That’s with a B – B-illion!
